Last week we took the day off because my cousin David J. Smith had this one lock for weareutahjazz.com -- so this week I'm going to give him a break. Here's who people think the Utah Jazz will draft.

Do we see a pattern here? Yes, I think we do. Only two guys have us NOT picking a PG. Most everyone has us picking the same guy. So I worry he won't be available for us (which was the case back in the Roy Hibbert draft and the Greg Monroe draft).

Only 5 of the 14 mocks have a second round so far, so it's hard to tell what we CAN do based upon a little more than 1/3rd of the data points. This looks like the BPA move, and possibly a draft and stash move. I don't know. Last year we had the #47 and picked Kevin Murphy -- and he did nothing for us. Previously at that same spot we got Mo Williams and Paul Millsap. I hope we pick someone good at that spot. But the magic may have run out.

Analysis-ish Stuff:
The first thing to note is that a couple of these mocks haven't really been updated that vigorously. CBS (J. Goodman), HoopsHype (A.Smith, no relation), NBA.com (S.Howard-Cooper), Sporting News (S.Deveney), and The Hoops Report (R.Feldman) are all still from right after the combine. As an aside, it was cool to meet a lot of these people. But their mock drafts are ancient by internet standards right now.
The second thing is that everyone sees us having a huge hard on for point guards. Sure, Mo Williams, Jamaal Tinsley, and Earl Watson are all free agents. So is combo guard Randy Foye. But I really expect the Jazz to bring at least two of those four guys back. Our overall off-season strategy involves the draft, but more than just the draft. So I don't expect the Jazz go to crazy on point guards. We're not picking three, or maybe not even two. However, these pros are all targeting PGs for us, which is nice of them.
I do think the Jazz aren't going to put the positional blinders on right now, after all they did draft Enes Kanter at #3 the season after acquiring Derrick Favors (the #3 the season before) -- and they play the same positions. We are a need based team, but we need everything.
That said, I'm not going to cry if we can somehow pick up Dennis, Shane, and some other guard.
If I was going to tell you which of these mocks I like the best (in terms of just what they have the Jazz doing) I would actually lean towards ESPN, SI, or the Hoops Report. Each of them has us picking up a strong PG, the first two have us getting a very interesting bigman -- while the Hoops Report has us picking up two very interesting wings. Dario Saric could be a big time scorer in the right system, and Tony Snell killed it at the combine. Am I at risk of overvalue-ing a) not having any info (Saric), and b) direct observational analysis (Snell)? Yes to both a) and b).
Anyway, it'll be fun to see what next week holds.
