After watching many more highlight/scouting than I ever could have wanted, I have developed some strong opinions on this years draft prospects. For instance, as a fit for the Jazz, I only like 4 guys at the top of the draft right now (my opinions have changed on a weekly basis). Its pretty clear that Wiggins and Parker are the cant miss prospects after Embiid tragically broke the navicular bone in his foot. I really like Exum. I think he will be the next great hybrid guard of the Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook mold. The last guy I like out of the top 2 tiers is Marcus Smart. He is competitive, gritty, athletic, good passer, and plays lock down defense. I advise all to watch the DraftExpress video of Marcus Smart VS. Andrew Wiggins, its impressive.
If we cannot, or choose not, to obtain any of those 4 guys I would like to see us trade down and try to add a veteran as well as a role player with the pick. I have come up with some scenarios.
I am a fan of Henderson for what he is, a fair-priced wing that can score off of the bench. He makes $12 million over the next two years. He is not transcendent at specific skill, but he can score around 15 a night and has improved his 3pt% in each of the last three years (35% Last year). Neal is a good backup PG that can play off ball due to his lights out 3pt shooting. With the pick we will have a few options, its possible Aaron Gordon is still on the board at 9 and would be great value there. Other possible choices include Gary Harris, similar player to Brad Beal with gritty defense; Nik Stauskas, has a Klay Thompson-ish game; and maybe even Julius Randle, he may drop due to foot issue; McBUCKET$, need I say more?
Young is a good player with about 2 yrs/$18 million left on his deal. He established himself as a PF that could stretch the floor and could fit very well next to Derrick Favors. He will be a very attractive trade piece as well if we decide to trade him during the year. He averaged nearly 18pts a game last year. With the pick we have all of the options mentioned above but can also look at Zach LaVine, due to a solidified front court. LaVine posted a 46 inch vert at a workout in California. He could be the best athlete in the draft. At 6'6 has great size for a PG and has loads of potential.
3. Jazz send #5 to Orlando Magic for Aaron Afflalo and #12.
This scenario is my favorite. Afflalo is possibly the 4th best shooting guard in the league right now and is underpaid at about 2yrs/$16 million. He scored 18 pts a game last year and added 3 assist and 3 rbs a night. He shot an incredible 43% from 3pt last year. He is also a very attractive trade asset for later if we so choose. As with all other prospects mentioned above, I like Adrien Payne at 12. He is a solid stretch-4 that would be ranked much higher if not for his age (senior). He is rumored to have had mono at the end of last year while still being very impressive in the tournament. He is a very big and physical inside presence to boot. Would look great next to Favors.
