JuMu's Juju: 2014-2015 Jazz Syllabus

2014-2015 Utah Jazz Syllabus

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Requirements:

The following is a set of guidelines of what to watch for this upcoming season as well as set expectations of what we would like to see from players, coaches, and other participants within the Jazz organization.

Course Description:

The Utah Jazz have been rich with their culture and legacy for several decades now, peaking with their dominance of the 1990s with NBA legends John Stockton and Karl Malone led by coach Jerry Sloan. As their careers waned, the Jazz have been in search for a lasting identity to establish a new era of dominance. This is easier said than done.

This cycle's attempt involves a defense-discipline-and-development-focused rookie coach in Quin Snyder. With his new system, along with the vast collection of young, but not quite elite, talent, the Jazz hope to put themselves on the right track to a new dynasty of dominance for years to come. This year's course will ideally make it clear which of our current personnel and assets can eventually lead us to this goal.

Course Prequisites:

  • Analysis of what made Stockton and Malone successful, and also what kept them from winning it all
  • Passion for the team's future success.

Course goals and expectations:

Not all basketball players or teams are created equal, thus many of these expectations will be given out on an individual basis on a curve. A decent amount of these benchmarks will require them to get enough minutes to achieve these. This is considered the responsibility of the player to prove to the coach that he has earned enough to get the minutes to do so. The rule of thumb in this course is that to earn a C, the person must make minor improvements from last season, while to earn a B or A, one must make major improvements.

First up will be team expectations followed by individual expectations. I grouped the team grades with the coach since the reality is that the coach is typically the one who gets blamed when the team does not succeed.

Conclusion:

This season for the Jazz is still an enigma at this point, so it is recommended that everyone goes into it with an open mind, and a positive can-do attitude. It is likely that there will be a learning curve at times; do not get deterred, but rather seize this opportunity to prove that this team with its eclectic group of players can put this franchise back on top of the league for years to come! Good luck on passing this course.
