Injuries Hurt Utah Jazz - The Downbeat #1825

New, comments
Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

Last night's loss officially dropped the Jazz out of the 8th playoff spot. They are now a half game back of the Kings, and 5 games back of Memphis for the 5th seed. The fact that they are even in the race is due to factors that have nothing to do with the Jazz. These factors include, but are not limited to:

  • The Eastern conference improving
  • The top 3 teams in the west being lightyears better than the rest of the west.
  • The top 2 teams in the west being two of the best teams of all time
  • Last year's WC contenders falling face-first off a cliff

And that's okay, because the Jazz's injury problems have completely ruined this season. Let's look at how bad:

  • Dante Exum, 42 games and counting: We won't discuss the level of impact this has had. We will only point to opposing PG scoring.
  • Rudy Gobert, 20 games: The Jazz went 7-13 in that time.
  • Derek Favors, 15 games and counting: The Jazz have gone 6-9 in that time.
  • Alec Burks, 14 games and counting: The Jazz have gone 6-8 in that time.

For those at home, keeping count, that's 91 games lost to injury.

If you take any team in the NBA and pull that many starting players from the roster, for that many games, they are likely in the same boat.

Let's use the Warriors as an example. Yes, more bullets. They're easier to follow.

  • The Jazz have no player that compares to Steph Curry, but let's say that the Jazz's equivalent is Hayward, in that he tends to carry the offense. Thus, in this scenario, Curry remains with the team.
  • Now, let's say that Dante's Warrior equal is Harrison Barnes. Barnes has missed 16 games this year, and in that time the Warriors lost their first game and had quite a few close ones.
  • Next is Rudy. For the Warriors, this is undoubtedly Bogut, who has only missed 6 games this year.
  • For Favors, the comp is Draymond Green. Again, this isn't an argument about who is better. It's about how they matter to their team. Green missed one game. The Warriors lost to the Nuggets.
  • Burks. Again, not a comparison on who is better, but let's say the comp is Igoudala.

What is the change in the Warrior's record if they lose these players for the amount of time that the Jazz have lost theirs? Is it safe to say the Jazz predicament is almost unprecedented for non-tanking teams?

Everyone's favorite Zach Lowe spoke to Rudy before the game last night:

Then Russ Bengston (Complex) had the realest tweet ever:

Russ is 100% correct here.

This is why Zach is great, he had no hesitation in pointing out that Rudy was incorrect:

As Melo found out during the game, when it comes to Rudy, you live with "agreeing to disagree"

Two East Coast games, two OT games. Let's play prediction time: What are your predictions for the last two games of the road trip?

1/22 @Brooklyn Nets

1/23 @Washington Wizards

Bonus: Will the Wizards game be rescheduled because of the looming "Snowmageddon"? All DC schools and government offices are closed tomorrow.

Let's finish this, once and for all. What is the correct nickname for Rudy? Answer the poll.
