Utah Jazz Rank: 6th man is Joe Johnson

The 36 year old veteran continues to add great value

NBA: Preseason-Maccabi Haifa B.C. at Utah Jazz Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

When Joe Johnson signed with the Utah Jazz last summer many of us didn’t know what to expect. He was entering his 16th season in the NBA, and some argued the Jazz had overpaid by giving him a 2 year 22 million dollar contract. This sums up his season contributions fairly well:

Turns out we consider him the 6th most valuable on the Utah Jazz roster.

One of the best storylines from that series was Joe Johnson absolutely punishing the Clippers time and time again through his savvy veteran post-ups. For the season, he averaged 9.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and shot 41.1% from 3.

And I swear he hit a clutch shot late in games about once a week. Not every coach has the luxury that Joe Johnson brings like Quin Snyder does. I swear he could be back in the locker room taking a nap and still come in and make a game-winner like it was nothing.

He’s on the 2nd year of his 2 year deal, so he’ll be a free agent this summer. His skill and contract could be very valuable to a contending team, but having his winning veteran presence is extremely valuable for guys like Rodney Hood and Donovan Mitchell. But he’s more than just a vet. In fact, Quin Snyder recently said he thinks Joe Cool could be the 6th man of the year this year. I don’t know that he should play the minutes to warrant 6th man of the year, but I’m already excited to watch him go Iso Joe on opposing defenses like someone over at the local YMCA.
