Ekpe Udoh started the Utah Jazz era of #EkpesBookClub with the book All Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe—which we hope is not a foreboding prophecy of this season—and now he’s announced the second book of #EkpesBookClub. It will be a novel by John Grisham entitled The Street Lawyer.
While Things Fall Apart was about a man named Okonkwo in his attempt to rise up among the ranks of his tribe yet struggling to do so because of personal mistakes and a changing world landscape, The Street Lawyer takes us from the African tribe to American courtroom.
Michael was in a hurry. He was scrambling up the ladder at Drake & Sweeney, a giant D.C. law firm with eight hundred lawyers. The money was good and getting better; a partnership was three years away. He was a rising star with no time to waste, no time to stop, no time to toss a few coins into the cups of panhandlers. No time for a conscience.
But a violent encounter with a homeless man stopped him cold. Michael survived; his assailant did not. Who was this man? Michael did some digging, and learned that he was a mentally ill veteran who'd been in and out of shelters for many years. Then Michael dug a little deeper, and found a dirty secret ...
It looks to be a good time. If you’d like to learn more and be part of #EkpesBookClub hit the link below and that will send you to the sign up for The Street Lawyer. I participated in the last #EkpesBookClub on twitter and had an absolute blast. Ekpe will give the date as to when to finish the book by and then you’ll have a discussion with him on twitter.
[Sidenote: I may have gotten ahead of myself on the last one and posted some spoilers to the ending of the book because I was a dolt and didn’t follow directions that we were only talking about the first half of the book.]
As Ekpe Udoh would say, “Be Great” and sign up for #EkpesBookClub below:
