Summer League Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Utah Jazz

Grayson Allen and the Summer Jazz look to thump Lonnie Walker and the Summer Spurs

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Midwest Regional-Kansas vs Duke Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Guess what time it is? It’s finally time for some Utah Jazz (Summer League) basketball! The league returns to Salt Lake City for the third straight year, owing to great fan support. Tonight, the Jazz play host to the San Antonio Spurs, who used their first round pick to draft college standout Lonnie Walker.

Game Info:

When: Monday, July 2, 2018

Where: Vivint Smart Home Arena, Salt Lake City, UT

TV: KJZZ, AT&T Sportsnet Rocky Mountain

Radio: 1280 AM/97.5 FM The Zone

Injuries:

None.

What to Watch for:

Blue Chippers

The Jazz and Spurs both drafted interesting players. Utah’s headline rook, Grayson Allen, was a hotheaded standout at Duke who has freak athleticism and a solid outside shot. Is he the second coming of Rodney Hood? Is he more like Trey Lyles? Gordan Giricek? Who knows! One thing is certain: Allen is a Jazzman, and I’m pulling for him to light it up.

And then there’s Lonnie Walker. Many thought that Walker would be drafted higher, but he fell to the Spurs. Of course. There’s a lot to like about this kid, including a good outside game, fine court vision, and Joe Johnson-like dribble penetration skills. He should be fun to watch this summer and beyond.

The Other Guys

Allen and Walker aren’t the only interesting players. Salt Lake City Stars standouts Naz Mitrou Long, Tony Bradley, and Georges Niang will be in the house as well. Niang in particular had an excellent season for Utah’s G-League affiliate, and it will be fun to note his progress.

On the other side, Derrick White scored in bunches for the Austin Spurs, putting up 20.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game, leading Austin to win the G-League title.

Summer League is fun. If you don’t have anything going on in the next few days, go support the team!
