Donovan Mitchell wasn’t there for any haters last night. After a classic second-half takeover performance, Mitchell iced the game with a midrange jumper that put the Jazz up four with 22 seconds left. Mitchell appeared to have words for Pistons Andre Drummond, saying “This is your fault, you did this”. But it was clarified afterwards who those words were actually intended for.
According to Mitchell in a post-game interview, there was a heckling fan in the corner that was in his ear all night long. Mitchell said that there was something specific that “really pissed him off” (he claims to not remember what it was), and he credited that moment to what got him going in the second half.
Donovan, on what sparked him: "I stopped listening to the guy in the corner. He said something to me. It really just snapped for me. … I’m giving all the credit to the dude in the corner. He really pissed me off." pic.twitter.com/Vh5JeZnOHT— Eric Walden (@tribjazz) January 6, 2019
Mitchell scored 24 of his 26 points in the last 18 minutes of the game, and put the Jazz on his shoulders on their way to victory.
Mitchell said it himself, he shouldn’t have needed a heckling fan to get him going, but it worked regardless. You have to love Donovan’s fire, and that tonight he got the best of a random guy in the stands. Shoutout to random Pistons fan in the corner, without you, none of this would have happened.
