We knew this day would come.
Donovan Mitchell and Team USA face Rudy Gobert and a France team reeling from its recent loss against Joe Ingles and Australia.
After a few games with sub par shooting performances, Mitchell is ripe for a big game. He’ll have to do it against Rudy Gobert who will be carrying the hopes of France on his broad shoulders.
The confrontation should be epic.
Most would expect at some point to see Mitchell challenge Gobert at the rim, but that may not happen. In recent games Mitchell has been playing a bigger role facilitating the offense for Team USA. In their game against Brazil, Mitchell led the team in assists with 7. He also led the team in +/- mostly due to his defense that has looked dominant at times during the tournament.
Probably the most underrated performer in the tournament has been Rudy Gobert whose defense has been dominant the entire tournament. He’s also been a vital cog in the French offense. His patented screens have made giant pathways for the french guards.
For the United States to beat france, they’ll have to find a way to counter Gobert. Easier said than done.

What to watch for?
Does Donovan Mitchell attempt to climb the Stifle Tower?
If possible, I think he does, but attempting that climb comes with great peril. Many have tried and few have succeeded. Those who do rise above Gobzilla assure themselves a a highlight on Sports Center as well as a memory for a lifetime. That may be too tantalizing for Mitchell to avoid.
And you know what? I bet Rudy Gobert wants him to try. Is there anyone else more willing to get a highlight for a massive block? Gobert is up to the task like no one else and is more than able to turn away anyone from the rim, including a Spida.
That possibility alone is worth that ESPN+ subscription. Buckle up Jazz fans!

Game Thread Ground Rules
Welcome to the SLC Dunk Game Thread.
Dunkers know how this thing works, but for you lurkers ready to make the jump to Dunker, we have a few guidelines. Remember to follow our community guidelines (no swearing, trolling, excessive use of Jerry Sloan’s name in vain, no personal attacks, no debates about Utah liquor laws, etc.). Remember to have fun. Anyone who dare blasphemes that Tim Duncan was a Power Forward (this means you, Pounding the Rock), Ben Simmons can hit threes, Gordon Haywardshould not be booed, Exum Island isn’t a 5-Star resort, Donovan Mitchell is Monta Ellis 2.0, men should never cry or John Stockton is not the best point guard of all-time will receive an automatic ban. Just kidding. But seriously.
