The Utah Jazz will close out their week on Sunday with the second game of a back to back against the Orlando Magic. The Jazz are trying to bounce back from a tough loss against the Miami Heat the night before. For the Jazz it’s a chance to round out their first 10 games of the season with an 8-2 record keep pace with some of the other top teams in the West.
The Jazz swept the season series with the Magic a year ago and the last time these two teams met April 3rd, it was a lopsided affair with the Jazz routing the Magic 137-91. The Magic are a much improved team this season, even though their 2-8 record doesn’t reflect so. The Jazz enter this game with high expectations to win, but it may not be so easy with the young and hungry Magic having five players averaging double figures so far this season. Utah is coming off of a strong game from Donovan Mitchell. Against Miami he scored 37 points and looked just fine after tweaking his right ankle earlier this week. The key to this game for the Jazz will be to establish a strong defensive game early and avoiding fatigue at the end of a three game road trip.
Orlando comes into this game hoping to snap a two game losing streak. It won’t be easy with the a veteran team like the Jazz coming to town, but the Magic have shown that they are not going to rollover or back down against anyone. With the addition of Jalen Suggs during this summer’s draft many expected the Magic to be a solid although still rebuilding team. The biggest surprise early on this season is the presence of another rookie, Franz Wagner. Wagner has had some up and down games which is to be expected from a rookie; but his poise and scoring prowess has been a welcome surprise for a team that is in need of all the offensive firepower that it can get. The key for the Magic will be to take advantage of a potentially tired Jazz team and not only shoot well but move the ball around to make it hard for the Jazz to get stops.
This game is going to be a battle as the Magic look to avenge the embarrassment that they must have felt after losing by 46 points about 7 months ago. Granted that was last year and the teams are slightly different but it should be a fun and competitive game to watch.
