A new era of Jazz basketball will include a new-look SLC Dunk, like always

+

This summer we’ve seen the Utah Jazz go through some huge changes. We’ve seen Quin Snyder resign, the hiring of Will Hardy and the blockbuster trades of Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert. It all leads up to the beginning of a new rebuild of the Jazz. But this won’t be the first rebuild we cover at SLC Dunk. When Jerry Sloan abruptly retired, SLC Dunk was there. When Deron Williams was traded after, SLC Dunk was there. The managers of this site from Basketball John (@5kl) to Amar to Mychal to me have been ticking everyone off writing about every trade, signing, firing, draft pick, and free agency pickup since basketball blogs have been around. That’s not stopping any time soon. With the new-look Jazz comes a new-look SLC Dunk. Because Purple is Back, we’ve brought on the new black and yellow color scheme to SLC Dunk. Ryan Smith and Danny Ainge have brought on a massive overhaul of this team, and we’re going to have a lot of fun on this new ride. If you want to be a part of this new era and write for the best Jazz blog out there, send me an email at jamesohansen@gmail.com. It’s strike first, strike hard at SLC Dunk... wait, that’s Cobra Kai. But, yeah, send me an email with examples of your writing to be considered for a contributor spot with our team.

The Utah Jazz announced today that Quin Snyder is concluding his tenure as the franchise’s head coach. Snyder departs Utah following eight years with the Jazz and a 372-264 (.585) regular season record. He leaves the Jazz as the second-winningest coach in franchise history. "Quin Snyder has embodied what Jazz basketball is for the last eight years," said Utah Jazz Owner Ryan Smith. "The tireless work ethic and attention to detail Quin displayed each day is a testament to the professional he is. I have nothing but admiration for Quin and respect his decision. Montrell Washington brings backyard football mentality to Broncos’ return game

+

Denver Broncos rookie Montrell Washington may be a fifth-round draft pick, but he is ready to make an instant impact. Fresh out of Samford, Washington made his name on the football field as a wide receiver. But he also did the damage as a return specialist, scoring four touchdowns in his college career. In this arena, Washington feels he’s ready to make an impact with the Broncos. Washington spoke on bringing a fearless, backyard football mentality to the return game during a media session on May 14. "I’m fearless," the rookie said. "I just think I’m fearless back there. Just catch it and go." When asked how he would describe returning, Washington compared it to the backyard football games he played in growing up.

Rudy Gobert and Shaquille O'Neal engaged in a war of words in debate over who would win one-on-one

+

Rudy Gobert isn't scared of Big Diesel. And vice versa. The Jazz center and three-time Defensive Player of the Year didn't take criticism from Shaquille O'Neal on O'Neal's podcast "The Big Podcast with Shaq" lightly. O'Neal went in on Gobert and the Jazz, saying: "What’s going on is what I told you all three years ago. Donovan ain’t that good and the Utah Jazz ain’t that good. Let’s just say it." O'Neal went on, repeating a common criticism of Gobert: His lack of offense. "Rudy’s a great player, a fine defensive player but he offers nothing on the offensive end. Like he has no post moves," he said. When Spice Adams said Gobert could hold Shaq to 12 point, O'Neal brushed it off, saying "Yeah, in the first three minutes." "It's against my religion for someone to hold me one-on-one," he continued. "You know what I would do to him? He's a shot-blocker, you can't shoot a shot. You gotta back his little skinny a-- up under the rim, and then show him the 'bow so he gets scared ... And then just go 'bah-bah' and dunk it right in his face." Rudy Gobert Trade Rumors: Raptors Among Teams with Interest in Jazz Center

+

The Utah Jazz are back to the offseason drawing board after falling in the first round of the NBA playoffs to the Dallas Mavericks, and speculation abounds regarding what may happen with centerpieces Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert. If Utah moves on from Gobert, then the Toronto Raptors "are among the teams who would have a degree of interest in trading for him," sources told SNY's Ian Begley. Gobert, who turns 30 on June 26, is a three-time All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 15.6 points, 14.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game last season.
