The Rudy Gobert contract extension situation took another interesting turn today, with a new report of negotiation details. On today’s episode of ESPN Podcast Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective Tim MacMahon reported that Rudy Gobert did NOT ask the Jazz for a supermax extension.
“I don’t have precise contract figures. I have been told that he did not ask for the full supermax, I know there has been some reporting in Utah that he did, I’ve been told that is not true.”
This report contradicts the earlier report that came from ESPN 700’s Porter Larsen, which stated that Rudy Gobert had asked for the supermax and was initially turned down. MacMahon also talked about the “gulf” that the Jazz need to cross with Gobert and securing him long term. Afterwards Brian Windhorst commented that there would be “a handful of teams lining up” to offer Rudy Gobert the supermax if the Jazz did not, and that the Jazz needed to consider that in their contract negotiations.
You can listen to the full podcast here, with the Gobert extension talk starting around the 57 minute mark.
This adds another layer of confusion and anxiety to the Gobert situation for fans in Utah. With just a few days in between the Jazz, Gobert, and the supermax extension deadline, we should know how things play out relatively soon.
