With the 12th pick of the 2015 NBA Draft . . . the Utah Jazz select Frank Kaminsky from the University of Wisconsin. I think we all saw this one coming. The majority of scouts I've talked to, and professional mock guys I've emailed with don't think the Jazz let Frank go past them if they pick at #12. Dennis Lindsey, well, I'm not quite sure. I think DL finds a guy he likes and then goes out and gets him - moving assets like current picks, future picks, player rights, and money in order to achieve that. He moved an existing lotto pick and a pick in the 20s to get Trey Burke, he moved back into the first round to get Rudy Gobert, he moved back into the second round to get Raul Neto, and rumor has it he gave up the pick that yielded Jarnell Stokes in order to secure Rodney Hood. To contrast that, well, he didn't move anyone around to get Dante Exum, and he picked Rodney when he fell into his lap. I think that WHERE the Jazz pick doesn't really marry them to a draft spot or player from that draft spot. But in this case, to make things simple, I have the Jazz picking Frank here. He's the best player on the NCAA Championship runner up, joining the Deron Williams / Gordon Hayward / Trey Burke club. Like those guys he has a bunch of NCAA hardware and big game experience. He is a player when the games actually matter and he 100% fulfills a need for this team as a legit stretch big who can rebound and block shots a little. In the Consensus Mock Draft 5.0 (which drops tomorrow) his rank actually is 12th. This is a fit. Well, at least he is a fit in terms of possibly being a 22 year old Ante Tomic with a three point shot. Where he doesn't it in is with the type of club Dennis Lindsey has built. He wants defenders, and he may prioritize getting a solid bench big to spell Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert without losing anything on defense. If I know Lindsey he's also not unaware of the concerns at point guard - but I think he doesn't jettison Trey Burke or Dante Exum just yet. I'm picking Frank here, and I know some Jazz fans are totally cool with that. Time will tell if Dennis is as well.
