With the 24th pick of the 2015 NBA Draft . . . the Cleveland Cavaliers select Cameron Payne from Murry State University. The Cavaliers almost have everything . . . except, you know . . . reliable bench players. Eight of their fifteen players are free agents this July, which is a huge amount of turn over. It could be even more if LeBron James and Kevin Love opt out. One guy who is locked up for longer than the rest is Kyrie Irving. And he is going to need a reliable back-up at some point. (The theory of Eric Maynor to Deron Williams) Payne, a Junior, could be that guy. Some mock drafts have him in the lottery, others in the late 1st round. One has him in the middle of the second. This is where you are going to find a player like him, at #24, and on his own merits he's worth taking a chance on if he is available. He's a heady point guard who is quick, and can see the floor well enough. This is the type of pass first point guard that LeBron doesn't get to play a lot with. He probably won't even if drafted by the Cavs. But he is precisely the type of point guard to straighten out a dysfunctional bench unit. Is he a guy who is the back up point guard on an NBA Championship team? I don't know. But then again, years ago no one thought Sam Cassell was, and he ended up being precisely that as a rookie.
