With the 27th pick of the 2015 NBA Draft . . . the Los Angeles Lakers select Jarell Martin from Louisiana State University. A player from the nation's number one party school now goes to the Lake Show, and will probably be on national TV 12 times as a result. The Lakers need everything, and earlier in this draft picked up D'Angelo Russell. With the impending free agency for Carlos Boozer, Tarik Black, and Robert Sacre (leaving only Jordan Hill, Ed Davis, Julius Randle, and Ryan Kelly -- enough warm bodies but no real impact player) it would behoove the Lakers to address their inside mess. Jarell Martin isn't going to turn it all into a five course meal, but he has the talent enough to prevent Lakers fans from starving. Martin is an athlete who would have been right at home during the Showtime era with his leaping and rebounding ability. He runs the floor like someone much smaller than him, and he can defend both threes and fours with this length and athleticism. I don't know what his true position at the NBA level will be, but a good coach could find a lot of use for a guy with his motor and energy. He's not someone who is going to step out and hit threes, or even handle the ball very comfortably. But maybe that makes him a Bryon Scott player? Julius Randle is supposed to assume some level of ascendance this season anyway. This guy could be the next Pig Miller. Or the next A.C. Green. It will be fun watching him try to figure it out.
