A look at all the times the Utah Jazz triple-double drought was ALMOST broken

Jordan Clarkson finally did it! Let’s look at all the times somebody almost beat him to it.

On New Year’s Day, Jordan Clarkson finally broke the Utah Jazz triple-double curse. The Jazz had gone 5,801 days since their last regular-season triple-double.

Here are some interesting stats to highlight how ridiculous that drought was. Since Carlos Boozer’s triple-double in 2008,

  • No other team had fewer than ten triple-doubles
  • Russell Westbrook recorded 198 triple-doubles
  • Over 160 different players recorded triple-doubles
  • Royce O’Neale recorded his first career triple-double in his 16th game after being traded from the Jazz
  • Ricky Rubio recorded five triple-doubles before joining the Jazz and two more after leaving the Jazz

Of course, triple-doubles don’t matter. They’re a fun stat showing how much humans like round numbers. It wouldn’t be a big deal if a team went a couple of seasons without one. This drought just lasted so long that it seemed to be a curse. As it stretched longer and longer, it became more notable. With each game that somebody was close to getting that last rebound or assist, Jazz fans became more eager to see the curse break.

Many Jazz fans can think of a game off the top of their heads in which a player was close to a triple-double but ultimately fell short. Maybe it was Rudy Gobert’s dominant game in Chicago in 2021 when he had 21 points, ten rebounds, and nine blocks. Perhaps it was Joe Ingles needing one more rebound on the Autism Awareness Night he helped organize, but Quin Snyder deciding to sub him out anyway.

I thought of quite a few of these games and got curious. How many games like that did the Jazz have during the drought? I decided to track down all the ‘near-triple-doubles’ recorded by Utah Jazz players after Carlos Boozer’s now-famous game in 2008.

I defined a near-triple-double as a game in which a player was within two stats of a triple-double. From 02/13/2008 to 01/01/2024, the Utah Jazz recorded 31 total near-triple-doubles.

Gordon Hayward leads the pack with six near-triple-doubles. Deron Williams recorded five. Donovan Mitchell, Kelly Olynyk, and Gobert followed with three each. Kris Dunn, Ricky Rubio, and Ingles each recorded two. Boozer, Mike Conley, Talen Horton-Tucker, Shelvin Mack, and Paul Millsap had one near-triple-double.

Some interesting observations from these games:

  • Paul Millsap’s eight steals are tied for the second-most in Jazz history. John Stockton and Rickey Green hold the record of 9.
  • Rudy Gobert recorded two near-triple-doubles with blocks and one with assists.
  • Kelly Olynyk’s three games on the list came within three weeks.
  • The Jazz recordeMarch 11ar-triple-dApril 9 less than a month from March 11, 2023, to April 9th, 2023.
  • 19 of the 31 near-triple-doubles occurred in either February or March
  • Shelvin Mack?

The streak is finally over. A Utah Jazz player recorded a triple-double. All it took was Will Hardy allowing Jordan Clarkson to stay in and get one more rebound. Now that the curse is broken, who do you think is most likely to get the next triple-double?
