Truly, an amazing game

The Utah Jazz aren't big time players in NBA Free Agency, and rarely swing for the fences when it comes to the NBA Trade Deadline. They have historically built through the NBA Draft and making minor moves here or there. One move that looks like it's going to pay off is the addition of Shelvin Mack (trade deadline trade with the Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls). The Jazz didn't have to give up much to get him, and compared to the other eight deadline moves the team has made, looks amazing.

Yes, three of the deals didn't net much, and in one case, one of the deadline deals failed to go through because the player didn't even report. Still, you can't take much from Shelvin here. It looks even better when you look at the first games for the Jazz that each of these players played after the deadline transaction happened.

These deals also include free agent signings around the deadline, and that 2002 team was really in trouble if Rusty had to come in there and play half the game. The interesting thing is going to be the long-term impact. Hornacek was starting, playing more than 30 a game, and dropping 20 points on guys in short order. What does the future hold for Mack?

Well, I for one can't wait to find out.

Two crazy people go ga-ga over trade deadline

The Utah Jazz made a trade! They got Shelvin Mack (not Jeff Teague or Ty Lawson), and didn't have to give much up for it. There were a number of other teams making moves yesterday, like the Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns, and the Detroit Pistons. And there were even MORE moves made, but those were the ones that really counted. How will the teams get better, if at all? Which teams are panicking? What ever happened to loyalty? (I see you Cleveland Cavaliers and how you did Anderson Varejao!) I got a chance to talk about all of this stuff with my man Phil Naessens on his show that we recorded minutes after the deadline yesterday.

It's all here. And it's all worth listening to (either at his site here, or just below if you are lazy!)

Personally, the more specific ideas I have on the Jazz can clearly be found in our Trade deadline stream here. And I had some more candid comments on twitter last night. But I will share them again here. While everyone was targeting Teague I felt like Mack (and Kyle Korver) were easier targets to get from Atlanta, especially since we had Trevor Booker and they are going to be missing Tiago Splitter. That didn't happen, but Mack is miles and miles ahead of a lot of the rotating roster spot we've had open for NBADL guys. And he's so much more legit at point guard than all of the Bryce Cottons and Erick Greens out there. The only issues that could occur with this move could be with Trey Burke. And that really needs to be resolved one way or the other.

Thanks again to Phil. Follow him on twitter @FlashTennis31. He's a good man who never stops working. We're all effectively working at a financial loss to produce content for the fans. And I respect him greatly for doing it better and free-er than a lot of other people who have more followers online.

The deals are done, and now everyone gets to have their say

The Utah Jazz had a lot of smoke coming into this NBA Trade Deadline, but there were very few fires that actually happened. Thankfully, and this is opinion, the team didn't end up with Ty Lawson and his "More-Money-Than-Derrick Favors-This-Season" contract. That Utah Jazz were involved in a three-team trade with the Atlanta Hawks and the Chicago Bulls, that had Shelvin Mack, Kirk Hinrich, Justin Holiday, and a future 2nd round pick all trade places. Also, because this part appears to be opinion, there were no resolutions on Trey Burke or Trevor Booker -- so that wasn't amazing. But overall, people were happy with what the Utah Jazz managed to do, on a night where no team was really shaking things up (except for the future Eastern Conference finalists, the Detroit Pistons). There were a few publications that went out to grade every team's moves . . . so this isn't as big as the NBA Draft.
Mack has established himself as the superior distributor, but his lack of scoring acumen makes him a worse offensive option than Burke.
For the low-low price of a second-round pick, the Utah Jazz reunite college teammates Shelvin Mack and Gordon Hayward and get a solid game-managing point guard to help out with what has been an enormous weakness.

As the trade deadline approached, the Utah Jazz got hungry for an experienced point guard to bring some steady play to the backcourt, and for awhile (sic) there, it seemed like the Jazz were ready to get really desperate by casting their lot for Ty Lawson.

But rather than make that kind of monumental mistake, Utah settled on a safer alternative: the seldom used Shelvin Mack in Atlanta.

In a three-team deal that included the Bulls, Utah acquired Mack and only had to send a 2018 second-rounder to Chicago in order to do so. With the way Utah's been playing since Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors returned healthy, going on a 7-2 streak over their last nine games, they didn't really need to make many changes at the deadline.

To that end it's hard to be overly critical of Utah's lack of activity, even if Mack is averaging an underwhelming 3.9 points and 1.6 assists in 7.5 minutes per game on abysmal .421 / .148 / .750 shooting splits this season. The question is, what was going on with Trey Burke and the Jazz PR team?

Utah’s need for point guard help earned a measured response on Thursday, when the Jazz flipped a marginal asset for a veteran placeholder. Mack was too good a player to be Atlanta’s third point guard, and certainly too good to play a largely distant third to capable superiors in Jeff Teague and Dennis Schroder. The Jazz offer a way out—an opportunity to play regular minutes, to work alongside a coach (Quin Snyder coached Mack in Atlanta) and star (Gordon Hayward played with Mack at Butler) with which he’s quite familiar, and to genuinely help a team in the playoff hunt.

The Hawks have no need for Mack, given they have apparently decided to keep starter Jeff Teague to go along with young reserve Dennis Schroeder. So, with that said, the Hawks turned around and sent Mack to one of the team’s they’d been talking about a possible Teague trade, the Jazz. Utah has been desperate for point guard help as the Jazz try to finally get back to the playoffs, and Mack will pair nicely with Raul Neto – assuming the Jazz choose to move on from former first round pick Trey Burke before today’s deadline.

So, overall, no one hated this deal for the Jazz. And personally (there we go again with that word), transmuting an "asset" (future 2nd round pick, a Denver 2018 2nd rounder that we got in that Andris Biedrins / Kevin Murphy trade) into a player (actual NBA level talent, Shelvin) is a good thing. It wasn't the best thing. And it wasn't the primary goal I would have going into the deadline. Of course, my goals are possibly different from the Jazz Org's goals. I want more of Trey Lyles on the court, because he's going to be a better player than Trevor Booker. I felt like Book's $4.7 million expiring contract would be easy to move -- especially since some teams were interested in him. If Booker is a long term fixture for this team, it better be as the 4th big, and not the 3rd. I went over this over here. So I would have tried to move Booker.

It's not the end of the world. And looking at this move in a vacuum, it's not that bad. Our writers agreed.

Most of us went with a B; MyLo is drinking the kool-aid; while Basketball John, Peter J Novak, Diana Allen, and JuMu were not completely sold. When all you do is move a 2nd rounder and get a 3rd stringer you're not exactly shooting for the stars. And clearly the Jazz did not feel desperate enough to do that right now.

* inc. non-guaranteed deals

The Jazz are still below the cap by more than $5 million. And that includes all of the money the team has given to Grant Jerrett, Elijah Millsap, Treveon Graham, J.J. O'Brien, Erick Green, Phil Pressey, and Eric Atkins this season. The Bigman rotation is strong, but falls off very quickly. I think an upgrade is there, perhaps even if you just wait and young guys get older. The Wing rotation is good when healthy, but there is a distinct lack of specialists. The only one who is is Burks, as a slasher. Hayward and Hood and Ingles are Alll-Arounders. As for the point guards, well, we are now at a robust 4 guys. Dante is hurt and will not play. There are 48 minutes to go to these three remaining guys, and I get the feeling the Mack will be Quin Snyder's next "Booker", in terms of irrationally loved guys.

The Jazz have money to use still, and if they are making a deal it needs to happen immediately, because the official deadline has passed.

Mack-attack

As first reported by Yahoo! Sports guru Adrian Wojnarowski, the Utah Jazz and the Atlanta Hawks are indeed dancing partners again. Utah got Raul Neto from them, and years ago they got Dominique Wilkins from us. Today we are adding limited minutes, bench point guard Shelvin Mack to the family. Woj reports that it's at the cost of a 2nd round draft pick.

This rumor was first discussed here, earlier today; and now we can say that it's moved from rumor to fact. The Jazz are not sending any players back, so right now the team has a complete 15-man roster. The Hawks aren't adding anyone back either, so they don't have to cut anyone. Mack is making $2.4 million this year, and the Jazz are very under the cap so this is nothing to worry about. He's making $2.4 million next year but it's non-guaranteed. So, again, that's nothing to worry about either.

What is to worry about right now is Trey Burke. The team has added another point guard, we're not at four, and one of them needs to go. And that guy will be Burke. So I expect more Jazz deals to happen today.

How does Mack fit with the Jazz? As a Hawks player he played under assistant coach Quin Snyder, now he will be under head coach Quin Snyder. He also is familiar with Gordon Hayward -- being his point guard during Butler's great run to the NCAA Championship. Other than that, the 25 year old point guard hasn't exactly been killing it at the NBA level. This season he is averaging 3.9 ppg, 1.6 apg, and 0.9 spg. He is shooting 14.8% from downtown, and on paper, he's really not close to Trey Burke. He's not a good NBA player right now. Jazz fans hate Trey and think he is horrible. I can only imagine if they will be objective enough to see how good Mack is (or is not). For his career, though, Mack is a 5.3 ppg guy who can dish a bit, 2.7 apg. He's not a shooter. Not at all. Which is one of the things Snyder needs from his point guys who invariably are spotting up more and more as wings handle the ball.

Mack will be a better 3rd stinger in my opinion than Burke would have been. And that's really it.

This is the move before "The" Move. So getting a PG was important. We have him now. I can't wait to see what our team does next!

Sports' guru Adrian Wojnarowski explained that the Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets are no longer dancing around with Trey Burke and Ty Lawson potential trades . . . it was only time for a new target to emerge. ESPN's Marc Stein (who was certain that the Lawson deal was going to happen) now reports that Atlanta Hawks, and former Butler Bulldog, Shelvin Mack may be on the table.

Early on this month I was thinking the Jazz could get Shelvin and Kyle Korver in a deal for some of our disposable parts (like Trevor Booker and Trey Burke). It's validating to know that I'm not the only one who sees a potential use for Shelvin in Utah as a 3rd string point guard. Our bros over at Peach Tree Hoops explain:

Utah head coach Quin Snyder is familiar with Mack who has proven over the years to be a steady if not spectacular option at the point when given minutes. The emergence of Dennis Schröder over the last two seasons has relegated Mack into a bench role. He has played in just 24 games this season and is averaging 3.9 points and 1.6 assists while shooting 42 percent from the field.

Trading Mack wouldn't likely bring much of a return but would open a roster spot and allow the Hawks to pursue a buyout players or to bring in a free agent.

- Kris Willis, Peach Tree Hoops, 2016

If the Hawks want nothing back then that still leaves the Jazz with Trey Burke. Gordon Hayward's college bro Shelvin is only making $2.433 million this year, and has a non-guaranteed deal for the same next year. So he's not that expensive and theoretically the Jazz could get him for little. The Jazz and Hawks do make deals, the Jazz got Raul Neto from them back in 2013. Furthermore, the Jazz and Hawks also made a deal in 1982 sending them Dominique Wilkins. Could another trade be on the horizion? Maybe.

Adding Shelvin makes things "better" for Gordon Hayward, but G-Time is still going to opt out of his contract as soon as possible. I don't know if Shelvin keeps him in Utah though, especially not when he doesn't have a long term contract either.

Is Shelvin better than Trey? No. Trey is a 2nd stringer and Shelvin is a 3rd stringer. Is Shelvin better than Trey at being a 3rd stringer? Probably, absolutely, yes. And that's where the Jazz are planning for next season with Dante Exum being the starter and Raul Neto and Alec Burks handling back-up duties depending on the situation.

I'm obviously okay with this for a variety of reasons, one of them because I thought of this myself. Of course, Marc Stein isn't right a lot when it comes to Jazz rumors, but we'll see what this all means.

Morning Update on Trey Burke rumors

After a night of craziness, we delve into the totally crazy as the next 12 hours (because deals will happen after the 3 p.m. Eastern deadline). For the Utah Jazz the rumors have been abound about the movement / liberation of Trey Burke. One of the most vocal (their side is leaking info) suitors are the Houston Rockets. Houston is highly motivated to move Ty Lawson. He's not working for them. He's coming off the bench for them. And he's making more than Derrick Favors this year and gets a raise next year. It's gotten to the point that rumblings out of H-Town suggest that if they can't move Lawson that they'll just waive him instead. So, it's more for them than for the Jazz to get a proposed deal (which would have to include more salaries, like Trevor Booker) done.

But what about Trey? Apparently it's surfacing that his camp believes that he should get a chance to compete for a starting spot somewhere. I feel like he's a Top 40 PG in the league, I don't know if he's a Top 30 PG in the league. But there are lots of things I do not know and I am willing to admit as such. Other people commenting on the Burke in Utah situation know more, or at least put on the airs that they do. In a way, many are assuming that the Jazz wish to honor his desire to be a starter somewhere and will move him sooner rather than later. For Utah they don't need Lawson, and perhaps with the emergence of Raul Neto and the hopes that Dante Exum returns healthy, that they don't need Burke either.

So if he is to be moved, it may not be for Lawson -- but someone else.

Okay, there's a lot there. First of all, we have to look at one huge thing -- Lawson is a troubled player off the court who is limping into 2016 Free Agency with not much to show for himself. He's more desperate than Trey is right now. Second, the Jazz don't have to help Lawson out, but they feel like helping Trey out because he did the opposite of what Enes Kanter did, and they did move Kanter as he requested.

A classy organization tries to keep it classy, and the Jazz will be doing that if they move Trey. Personally, I would rather everything work out, but players and teams need to figure it out for themselves. There can be other suitors for Trey, but their sides are not leaking info. And we know the Jazz run a tight lipped ship. Trey is better than Ty. I think Utah also knows that, especially with their slow pace of play, that Ty's strengths will be eliminated in the #801.

If a move is made it's because Utah wants it to happen. And not because the Houston Rockets are desperate enough to move a guy that they are thinking of eating his $12 million in salary by cutting him.

Looking at the two point guards, and seeing which one is better this year

I'm going to be real here, I cannot be objective about Trey Burke. I was stoked he was going to Michigan, and really followed his great play during the NCAA Tournament that led to him taking his team to the Championship game. Not in my wildest dreams did I imagine the point guard needing Jazz would ever end up with him. But I was wrong. The Utah Jazz moved up to get Trey Burke, and handed him the keys to the team as a rookie. Since then it's been a bumpy ride where he's had to change his role as the team brought in two new rookie points after he was taken in the 2013 NBA Draft. Today (yesterday depending on if you are reading this in the Eastern time zone) it was revealed that the Houston Rockets are trying to dump their most recent mistake on the Jazz, Ty Lawson, and walk off with Trey.

And I'm going to be real here too -- just as I cannot be objective about him, it appears as though none of our fan base can. I get that a lot of people aren't happy with him overall, and that his play hasn't been that of a game changer on a consistent enough basis. However, when you compare him to all the other bench point guards in the NBA this season it's clear that he's one of the best. Of course, sports fans can't be rational at times. And most have already made their mind up about Burke. That said, when I attempt to be objective and look at the numbers, trading him for Ty Lawson is not a deal I would make.

Career Experience:

Ty Lawson was selected 18th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft. He's currently in his 7th season in the NBA after spending three seasons at the University of North Carolina. Trey Burke was selected 9th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft. He's currently in his 3rd season in the NBA after spending two seasons at the University of Michigan. The Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets both don't have the best point guard situation this year, but both of these players are what you could claim are vets. Less so for Trey, but Trey is also still on the way up for his career trajectory. Ty is either at his peak right now, or already on his way down -- which is a problem for players who make the league based on their physical speed and quickness. One common quality of both is that they have played minutes early and often in their careers.

When you include the playoff experience it's clear that Ty has the advantage in experience. He has played more, and he has already reached his peak. His time with the Denver Nuggets saw him play a fast paced game for a running team, and he was involved in a lot of possessions. On the flip side, Trey has always played on slow teams. I don't know if this changes much, but Lawson has more miles on his legs. Duh. He's been in the league longer and is older, and played one more year in college.

With the more miles he's had more time to get injured as well.

Trey plays in 90% of the games the team plays, while Ty is at a pretty close 87% for his career; but it's only about 85% over the last three seasons. Is a 5% difference big enough? Over a 82 game schedule that amounts to 4.1 games. Trey is younger, healthier, and has more upside still.

Player Qualities:

These players are more than just the minutes they have played, or the games they are healthy enough to get in. If you look at their pre-draft measurements you can tell there are some differences there.

First of all, Trey is younger by over 5 years. He's also taller, has a longer wingspan, and a greater standing reach. What you don't see here are the athletic anthropometric scores like lane agility speed, or 3/4 court sprint, or any jumping stuff. Why? Well, I don't know how valid scores from 2009 would be for a guy who has played 7 years in the league and been injured a number of times. Similarly, Trey is at his lowest body fat percentage now and has been going to P3 for years and is a better athletic specimen than he was when he was measured in 2013. Ty's athletic advantage (and I agree he has one) will only continue to go down and down over the years. Trey didn't make the league because of his freak athleticism, and as a result, it's less important to his game going forward.

If he can learn to be a better defender he has the tools to be legit with his wingspan as a point guard. Ty is speedy, but he's not anything anyone would call a lock down defender either, just ask a Nuggets fan. Rockets fans may be completely sold on getting rid of Lawson mainly because of his contract.

Yeah, the Jazz aren't paying Trey a lot right now, and in 2017-2018 they will be giving him a new contract (possibly). That same off-season they will have to pay Rudy Gobert and will be throwing a lot of money at him. Trey? He's probably not going to be earning eight digits, though with the crazy cap who knows? One thing we do know is that Lawson is on the books this year for over $12 million -- which is Derrick Favors money. The great thing about his contract is that he is not entirely guaranteed for next year. I don't know if it is partially guaranteed, but the Jazz may not want to honor it if they do not have to. But if they DO like Lawson, they'll be ponying up over $13 million for a bench point guard behind Dante Exum, but ahead of Raul Neto.

Both of these guys aren't great defenders. One scores in the half court, the other in the open court. One is fast and relies on his speed, despite being much older and more injury prone. The other is slower, but doesn't use his speed to be effective.

2015-2016 Season Stats:

This season both players have come off the bench for long stretches of the season. The Houston Rockets are obviously not happy with Ty, and want to move him. The Utah Jazz are listening to offers for Trey, and he may not be in the long term plans. So when we compare apples to apples, and just look at their per game averages off the bench you get some very interesting results.

Yeah, Ty Lawson is averaging 5.11 ppg, 3.03 apg, 1.17 rpg, and 0.69 spg. He's shooting 41.0% from the field, and has an ORTG / DRTG of 102 and 105.

Trey Burke is averaging 11.82 ppg, 2.57 apg, 2.02 rpg, and 0.63 spg. He is shooting 42.3% from the field, and has an ORTG / DRTG of 104 and 110.

Neither is killing it, and what Trey is doing (doubling in scoring, for example) is in just 4.44 more minutes per game. Trey shoots worse from deep this year, but it's not by much, -2.1%, while shooting 2.76 more threes a game.

Career-wise Lawson is the superior player, obviously. But Lawson isn't getting any younger, and he's not getting any better either. Trey doesn't turn the ball over, and he's a big part of the offense. Lawson had a different role with the Rockets this year, but even as a distributor, is only barely ahead. Trey is about +10% better at being an offensive player, and about -10% better at taking care of the ball.

But as a scorer, there are huge differences as well.

Social Media:

Trey Burke has been a good soldier in Utah and taken the roles changes without any problems. He was on the airplane to Washington and I guess he wanted people to know about it.

Yeah, one of these guys doesn't look like he has "Jazz DNA". The other guy is yet another in a long line of "best player on the losing NCAA team" behind Gordon Hayward and Deron Williams.

The End?

Overall, I'm still not objective about Trey Burke. But in the objective view of him (today) against Ty Lawson (today) it's not that hard to see which of the two is having the superior season. I feel as though Lawson is only going to get worse over time, while Burke may never have a huge peak in the NBA, he's still not yet at his. Overall, Lawson is the better player and has the better career, and he could end up being cheaper in the long run. But I can't help but think that the Jazz can get something better than Ty Lawson and absolute trash for Trey Burke + Trevor Booker.

If these two are the principals in a trade then the Jazz are losing that trade. But, again, I'm not objective about this.
