Utah Jazz have their third star. What does Mike Conley bring to the table?

The 2019 NBA Draft is over. The dust has settled ... for now. Mike Conley is leaving his home in Memphis and heading to the Salt Lake Valley. There is understandable excitement surrounding the trade. Donovan Mitchell has performed admirably over the past two seasons, but he has also been overworked, carrying the bulk of the backcourt load most nights. With the arrival of Conley, he has help. So, what can we expect from our new point guard this season?

1. Defense

Mike Conley is the last player left of the “Grit-N-Grind” era in Memphis. He has quick hands, can stay in front of his defender, and jumps into passing lanes. Over his career, he has posted a defensive rating of 108 points per 100 possessions. Not world-beating, but respectable.

Defensively, Conley and former starting point guard Ricky Rubio are similar, which is not a bad thing.

2. Pick-and-Roll

Utah’s bread and butter is the pick and roll for two reasons: Number one is Donovan Mitchell, and number two is Rudy Gobert. During the 2018-19 season, Donovan Mitchell handled the ball in the pick-and-roll on 857 possessions, fourth-highest in the league. Mike Conley was the ball handler in 591 possessions, good for 12th. So why was Donovan the ball handler rather than point guard Ricky Rubio?

Two major reasons stand out to me. First, when Ricky was the primary ball handler, a score resulted only 38% of the time. Donovan Mitchell, on the other hand, posted a score frequency of 43.6%, a considerable improvement. And Mike Conley? 43.8%. Secondly, Ricky Rubio’s ball handling in the pick-and-roll resulted in a turnover a whopping 22.8% of the time, a problem which gave Jazz fans heartburn throughout the season. Mitchell and Conley, by contrast, produced a turnover 11.4% and 11.3% of the time when handling the ball in the pick-and-roll.

Now that Conley is in town, the Jazz have two highly competent pick-and-roll ball handlers. With Mitchell, Conley, and Rudy working the PnR, the Jazz offense—offense—is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the regular season and beyond.

3. Shooting

When Ricky Rubio was our starting point guard, the shooting was generally the job of either Donovan Mitchell or Joe Ingles. Teams would sag off of Ricky and dare him to shoot. Sometimes he made them pay, but not enough for them to stop daring him to shoot. You do not dare Mike Conley to shoot unless you want him to score in bunches, which he might do anyway.

4. Passing

One of the things we loved about Ricky Rubio was his passing. How does Conley stack up? Well, for one, his assist/turnover ratio is better. For every 3.5 assists, Mike Conley gave up one turnover. For Ricky, it was every 2.4. Rubio assists more overall, especially if you look at the per 100 possessions numbers, (9.2 for Conley and 12.5 for Ricky) but Conley balances that out by being able to create good shots for himself, which is something that Ricky struggles with. For some of Mike’s passing highlights, watch at 0:15, 1:20, and 1:40.

5. Commitment to the Community

One thing that has endeared Jazz fans to players quickly is seeing their willingness to help out and be present in the community. Donovan Mitchell is absolutely amazing at this, being rightfully nominated for the NBA Community Assist Award. The other Jazzman nominated? Mike Conley, for his work in Memphis. Conley has supported sickle cell research, donated money to kids in accidents, and attended forums on civil rights. He was and is a staple in the Memphis community. His first interaction with the people of Utah may have been a little rough, (to be fair, the great Karl Malone did as well, see our City of Utah shirts) but he fixed it almost immediately in a very self deprecating and awesome way. Seriously, though, this man is a gem, and will no doubt continue is stellar off-court work in Salt Lake.

A 28-year old journeyman, junkyard dog combo forward

The Utah Jazz sent three players to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of the exchange for veteran point guard Mike Conley and the best among those is Jae Crowder. Even if you want to argue Kyle Korver, it seems fairly unlikely that the 38-year old sharpshooter actually appears in a game for the Grizzlies.

Crowder will be the most immediate payoff for Memphis in the Conley trade. Grayson Allen is a development project as are the draft picks received (obviously). This may or may not be desirable for a now-rebuilding franchise, but it’s nice to have veterans along for the ride who can offer a little hand-holding to the young prospects.

That last bit, the ushering along the development of draftees, may likely be the thing Crowder contributes most in his time in Memphis. In Utah, Crowder was a beloved player and teammate. He fit well within the locker room and provided a positive attitude.

Crowder’s attitude and on-court demeanor also made him a quick fan-favorite. He’s the junkyard dog that every team needs and every fan loves. Even when his play didn’t live up to what was expected, given his role, you couldn’t really hate Crowder straight up.

In terms of on-court performance, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for Crowder. As a Jazzman, he actually didn’t play well in a number of ways. He was rarely a negative, but neither did he significantly raise the overall potential of the team.

Shooting ended up being the biggest weakness of Crowder. He shot 32.8 percent from deep in two seasons in Utah. That’s not crippling, but he also was jacking up 6.3 per game in that span, by far the highest rate of his career. When Crowder was hitting those, the Jazz were nigh unstoppable, but those games were somewhat few and far between. He also doesn’t contribute much in the pick-and-roll or passing game. He’s no point forward à la Draymond Green.

Those offensive limitations may appear to clash with the previous statement of Crowder not being a negative on the court. He’s not, don’t worry. How? Well, defense mostly. Crowder is a quality defender capable of switching onto pretty much anyone that isn’t a traditional center or lightning-quick guards. And while his offense isn’t spectacular, there were at least still those moments of competence that shone through darkness.

Overall, what Crowder mainly did was give the Jazz a taste of what a modern, more athletic, efficient, shooting stretch four could do for a team. When he first joined the team, Crowder contributed to a historic season-reversing run that included him being part of the best lineup by net rating over the second half of the season (Crowder, Ricky Rubio, Donovan Mitchell, Joe Ingles and Rudy Gobert). In that regard, his time in Utah was well spent. But by the end, his lack of improvement led to him overstaying his welcome.

While the era of Jae Crowder in Utah was ultimately short and had its fair share of bumps along the way, you’d be hard-pressed to find a Jazz fan who will tell you he is a bad player and even fewer will say he is a below-average human being and teammate. Those things may not be the greatest compensation for giving up a franchise legend like Conley, but that’s reality at this point.

Utah’s front office is going for quantity hoping to find quality.

The Utah Jazz went into draft night with a good chunk of its offseason work already done, having secured another play-maker in the form of Mike Conley. Getting the veteran cost Utah it’s top pick in the draft, the 23rd overall selection, leaving Dennis Lindsey with just the 53rd overall pick.

That didn’t stop Lindsey and the rest of the front office staff from being very active late in the draft. They acquired two extra second-round picks — the 50th and 58th — and ended up taking three players. In order, these players were forward Jarrell Brantley, combo guard Justin Wright-Foreman and shooting guard Miye Oni.

There’s a consistent theme with each of these players. All three are small-school guys (two, Brantley and Wright-Foreman, came from the Colonial Athletics Association) who excelled in these small environments. Oni and Wright-Foreman each won back-to-back Player of the Year Awards in the Ivy League and CAA, respectively. And Brantley made the First Team All-CAA and All-CAA Tournament team this past season.

Bringing in guys from smaller conferences can be pretty risky (hence, why a lot of them go late in the draft or end up being busts when picked high). Utah’s GM, Justin Zanik, brushed aside some of these concerns when asked about it by the media.

“Whenever you move up a level, there’s always a transition,” Zanik said to the media. “If you work hard, you have a skill set and a game that translate or could translate and a coaching staff that could help you get better — there is a saying: if you go play in college and you’re good enough, the NBA will find you. These guys were all known commodities. They all had very successful careers, so it wasn’t something where they just came on the radar, maybe on a public level or a media level. From a scouting level we’ve known about these guys for a while.”

The notion of having the skills and attributes that translate to the NBA and fit with the Jazz as presently constituted was something Zanik harped on multiple times during the post draft media availability.

“All of these guys, we’re really excited to have them and they fit what we’re looking for as far as Jazz players now and going forward,” Zanik said.

An important thing to keep in mind, however, is the fact that each of these guys were picked more than 50 spots into the night. That doesn’t happen without cause and it never bodes well for a player when they slip this far. Plus, Zanik hinted, quite strongly, that there’s no guarantee these guys will be on the roster after the initial phase of free agency.

Still, what is intriguing about each of these three players is the potential they can bring. A lot of guys from mid-major and below teams tend to be the high floor/low ceiling kind of players. Athletes with a lot of skills but not much in the way of athleticism and star potential. These guys don’t seem to be that way. They’re the kind of late picks that could blossom. It’s highly unlikely they become stars, but it’s at least conceivable in some cases.

Brantley is capable of being an upgraded version of Jae Crowder, Wright-Foreman holds a lot of scoring and shooting potential without being way undersized (he’s 6-foot-2 but has a 6-foot-7.5 wingspan) and Oni is a solid 3-and-D prospect. They each have plenty of things to work on, but again, that’s something every GM, including Zanik, in inherently aware of.

“Every guy that comes in the league needs to work on things,” Zanik said. “They’re not fully formed players. They’re all in their early twenties, and we have a great developmental and coaching staff that will help these guys along. They’re all, from what we see, willing to learn.”

The road for second round picks is significantly harder than lottery or even mid-first round prospects. Luckily for these three, Zanik wasn’t lying when he talked about the great developmental and coaching staff of the Jazz. They’ve managed to find several gems like Joe Ingles and Royce O’Neale by even less conventional means. If Brantley, Wright-Foreman and Oni put in the work, they can find success in Utah.

Look, man, they’re on a budget.

If Utah Jazz fans went to bed early they may have thought tonight was a quiet night for the Jazz. When the 50th pick rolled around, the Utah Jazz traded with Indiana for Jarrell Brantley from the College of Charleston. They then used their original pick to draft a high scoring guard—Justin Wright-Foreman—from Hofstra. If two were not enough the Jazz then drafted another player in the second round—Miye Oni from Yale. HELL, if you’re reading this, you may have been drafted by the Utah Jazz in the second round. But why cash in for THREE second round draft picks?

The Utah Jazz when acquiring Mike Conley gave up a key cog in their most effective lineups in Jae Crowder. Without Jae Crowder, the Utah Jazz will be relying heavily on Georges Niang to unlock the key. While they are bullish on Niang’s development, it’s a GIANT step from a few minutes a night to taking over Jae Crowder’s minutes completely.

That’s where the first of the second round picks comes in. Jarrell Brantley has the potential to be a steal at #50 and if he’s not ready, he at least can learn the ropes and begin to be developed. Small ball is here to stay in the NBA and Utah needs to be ready.

Justin Wright-Foreman averaged 27 points a game at Hofstra while shooting 42.5% from three. That’s a player I think Utah would like to work with and develop. If Justin Wright-Foreman doesn’t work out, there’s always Miye Oni who is a 6’6 guard with an intriguing wingspan of 6’11 inches and has put on a show in big games. There’s potential.

The reality is that all of these players are the off-brand versions of what they’re trying to replace. To steal from a Space Balls, “YOU’VE CAPTURED THEIR STUNT DOUBLES!” The MAIN reason we didn’t see Utah going for 1st rounders was the guaranteed money they’d have to give up. Utah can sign a second rounder to a more team friendly contract that may be non-guaranteed. Likewise, that contract will not exact the financial toll that a 1st round contract will which will help Utah with their limited cap space as they approach 2019 NBA Free Agency.

As the NBA Draft has now passed, the beginning of NBA Free Agency is now 10 days away. The Utah Jazz roster now looks like this:

PG: Mike Conley, Dante Exum, Justin Wright-Foreman, Raul Neto

SG: Donovan Mitchell, Royce O’Neale, Miye Oni

SF: Joe Ingles, Jarrell Brantley

PF: Derrick Favors, Georges Niang

C: Rudy Gobert, Tony Bradley

*Non-Guaranteed Contracts in italics

Right now the Utah Jazz only have 12 players on their roster with half of them either being second rounders or going completely undrafted. The Utah Jazz still need an infusion of talent so we can expect to see them looking for bargain deals with players on veteran’s minimums and using their Mid Level Exception which will be valued at $4.6MM. If Utah can find a couple veterans who are going ring hunting while finding a quality player for $4.6MM, Utah is set.

Utah Jazz General Manager Justin Zanik believes there will be quite a few roster spots available this upcoming season. However, the Utah Jazz likely will not to want to go into the season having to count on rookie second rounders like Jarrell Brantley or Justin Wright-Foreman. They are projects. If they progress faster, gravy, but they were not selected with the idea of instant production, rather they are future proofing Utah’s roster on a budget—and making Salt Lake City Summer League much more intriguing.

It does appear that Utah really does believe in guys like Derrick Favors and Dante Exum fitting in with Mike Conley well. Spacing is still an issue in the paint, but Utah is being aggressive as promised. I would be surprised if there were not more trades and fireworks from Justin Zanik and Dennis Lindsey.

Jarrell Brantley will be on a non-guaranteed contract and will most likely be fighting to make a roster spot.
