NBA Regular Season 2012-2013, Game 1

Dallas Mavericks 94 @ Utah Jazz 113

Jazz starters came to play, all of them had double digit points, two with 20+ points, two with double doubles

Dallas, missing two starters, tried hard, but did not have the offensive firepower as Elton Brand went 2-8, and Shawn Marion went 2-7 in the starting lineup.

The shot distribution is going to be something to watch this season for sure. It's not the old "Al The Conqueror" ball anymore, and I was just beginning to sell myself on that.

Mo Williams had 21 points, 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 2 rebounds, went 2/4 from downtown, and 5/5 from the line

Marvin Williams also had 21 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, steal, and block, while going 2/3 from downtown, and 5/5 from the line

Al Jefferson had a 12 / 14 double double, with 3 steals and 2 blocks -- and KEEP IN MIND HE PLAYED LESS THAN 30 MINS

Paul Millsap had a 13 / 15 double double, with 3 assists, and 1 steal

Gordon Hayward rounded out the starers with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and he went 3/5 from the line.

Our starters picked up 23 FTA. That is such an improvement from last season. The bench also got to the line, in total, we went to the line 42 times. That's Lakers level; and we made 73.8 ft%

Offensively there wasn't much to complain about, 20 offensive boards, 42 FTA, shot 42.9% from three, had 24 assists, and only 14 turn overs. And yeah, scoring 113 points makes a lot of things go over well.

Special shot out Randy Foye who sucked in the first half, but finished the game with 13 points, off of 4/9 shooting, going 2/4 from deep, and 3/3 from the line. He also had 3 assists and 3 rebounds. A solid over all game in 22 minutes of action. I'm glad we've figured out he's not a PG anymore. Defensively, he's a work in progress, except for the fact that he's 29 years old.

Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors had 17 rebounds and 12 points off the bench, in addition to 6 fouls, 7 turn overs, and 3 blocks. Bruising ball, but far from perfect.

DeMarre Carroll was full of hustle if not polish, and Jamaal Tinsley kept our offense going when Mo was on the bench.

Kevin Murphy scored his first basket of his career, off of an Alec Burks assist, caused by a Jeremy Evans deflection.

For the Mavs, their bench did a lot as usual (40 points!), but as a team could not handle the 37-13 third quarter from the Jazz

Great team win. Need to build on this. Good start to the season. Back to Back set @NOR and @SAS will be a test, followed shortly by @MEM (those three road games in 4 nights)

The Mavericks beat the Los Angeles Lakers last night, fighting their size advantage with hustle, grit, and a whole lot of small ball. Elton Brand, O.J. Mayo, Shawn Marion, and Vince Carter look to do it again tonight, in the ESA. I have to say watching the Dirk Nowitzki / Chris Kaman less Mavs battle it out and win one on the Lakers floor made me happy. All that happiness is supposed to end tonight as the Jazz need to exert their inside domination on the league, starting with the injured Mavs.

NBA Regular Season 2012-2013, Game 1:

Dallas Mavericks (1-0) @ Utah Jazz (0-0)

Player Focus: Al Jefferson

.

Sorry fans of the youth movement, this season is pretty much going to be primarily about Big Al. He led the team in points last year. He takes the most shots. The majority of the off-season moves were made to structure the team more around his talents. And everyone from the national media to the local media knows the score -- he's in a contract year, and he's not going to be asked to make any concessions this year. He's not going to have to deffer to anyone. And he's going to be our go to guy.

As a result, sadly, we're going to have to expect him to be that guy. I'd want us to share the sugar more, and we did so in the preseason. But the regular season is a different animal. Which is great, because in the preseason Al Jefferson shot 44.9 fg%, averaged 15.8 points per 36 minutes, went to the free throw line 1.8 times a game, and accrued a PPS value of 1.06 -- which is much lower than his average, which is already below NBA league average.

I love what Al's been doing by being more active on defense. I love what Al's been doing by passing the ball more (averaged 2.0 apg in 23.6 mpg in the preseason, a solid 3.0 in 36 minutes). But the big deal with Big Al as our $15 million dollar man is that we need him to be our first option. And he needs to be a deserving first option.

During the off-season I went deep into that and found some ways that could help him get there (more shots at the rim, less face up or turn around jumpers from no-man's land); however I don't know if the Jazz will run him like that. I want Al to succeed here. And a big part of that is going to become that steady, legit, premiere first option. In the preseason against Not- Dwight Howard, Not- Kendrick Perkins, and Not- Andrew Bogut (and not- LaMarcus Aldridge or not- Pau Gasol for one of two games) we did not get what we are paying for with Big Al.

He didn't do it for me in the preseason as a scorer. And he didn't do it against 2nd and 3rd level talent. The games mean something now, and we need Big Al to play Big. I think he can. But it has to start tonight, against Not- Chris Kaman.

C'mon Al, score 20 tonight while shooting above 50 fg%. We all know you can. And the immediate future of this team, in 2012-2013, will partly rely on you doing this every game. I know for a season you've only scored 20+ ppg twice in eight seasons, and shot above 50 fg% three times in eight seasons. Make this ninth seasons, a contract year, count. Make it count starting tonight.

And really, if you can score 30 on Ben Wallace / Greg Monroe -- you can score 80 on Eddy Curry.

Advantage --

On paper it looks like the Jazz have the advantage because, well, the other team is missing two former All-stars. Of course, we're missing our best point guard defender!! See! We're injured toOOOooO! Well, okay, I'm hesitant to give the Jazz the advantage here because we lose when we do. But, yes, we have the advantage here.

Game Preview! No, it's not late! Shut up!

.

The Basics:

This is the first game of the season for our beloved Utah Jazz. And it's against another Western Conference playoff team: the Mavs. Dallas has been an obstacle for us in the past, mostly games in their gym though. It's our home opener, so I would expect the Jazz to come out and play hard.

After all, these games count.

.

.

History:

Last season the Jazz and Mavericks played four times, with the Jazz losing the first three. Ouch.

Game 1: Jan 19th, Dallas 94 @ Utah 91

This season I hope for better results, particularly on defense. But last season was last season, both of our teams have made a number of changes in the off-season. The Mavericks have lost Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Brendan Haywood, Tyson Chandler, Lamar Odom, Yi Jianlian, *and* Shan Foster to name a few. (They did lose a few more guys) They did bring in Elton Brand, Darren Collison, Chris Kaman, O.J. Mayo, and drafted a few dudes as well. Of course, we didn't stay the same either.

The history of these two teams means little, especially since Dirk Nowitzki (who scored 40 in two of the games last year) is injured.

.

.

The Game:

The game is going to be interesting particularly because the Mavs are without Dirk and Chris. Without Dirk they are way more dangerous and harder to guard because they share the ball more and are unpredictable. That's like how we play without Al Jefferson. And they used that to their advantage last night. Being under-estimated and under-scouted is something we know all about. So it would suck if we fall prey to it. I'm particularly interested in Jae Crowder, a rookie. He was a wing, but pushed into service as a SF/PF who played quite a bit of PF last night. As a result, he has super stretch ability. I want to see if Tyrone Corbin goes big or small. Going small could mean putting Paul Millsap or Marvin Williams on Jae when he's playing the 4. (Let's be honest, we could do that against Shawn Marion as well) I do think we try to keep things traditional tonight.

Which is going to play right into the trap the Mavs will try to spring on us with their new lineups and super fast guards in Darren Collison and Rodrigue Beaubois. I wouldn't dream of Alec Burks being asked to defend one of them, but it wouldn't be the stupidest decision one could make.

If the Jazz are going to go big, they can -- but it's not like the Mavs will roll over and die. Brendan Wright and Eddy Curry showed up last night as long, active, space eaters. But if the Jazz go big I wonder how well we'll do. Al Jefferson and Derrick Favors both shot poorly (fg%) in the preseason, and I must point out that Al did look really bad at scoring, he did make a much better effort at team play and being a part of the team in a fluid offense.

Both of these teams were supposed to be at the bottom of the Western Conference's playoff standings when the dust settles. And, I guess, you could say both teams are overlooked despite making a number of changes. I think Dallas can be way better on paper than I'm giving them credit for. Being without Dirk and Chris is going to hurt them right now -- but as Mavs fans know -- this could mean a better acclimation period for the new guys to find their own place. We need to do the same thing, and appear to have already locked guys into roles.

.

.

Word from the Badguys:

Dood! I really did it! I really did it this time! I talked with some real people from the other team! I talked with Kirk from Mavs Moneyball and Jonathan at SB Nation Dallas. And the Q&A is up here. Check it out! Woo! For the record, I was organized at one point in my life for like a 2 hour stretch!

.

.

X-Factors:

It's gotta be about the benches here. Last night the Mavs bench scored 37 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, and dished out 9 assists. They got major contributions from Crowder (whose dad used to play for the Jazz), Curry, Beaubois, and Carter. The Mavs bench held off the Lakers starters during the 3rd quarter. They impressed me. But I'm also impressed by our bench. The "non-Starters" for the Jazz curb stomped opponents all preseason long.

But there's the rub. What we did in the preseason may or may not mean anything now that the games count. I sure hope that our play is evocative of greater, internal, improvement. We'll see tonight.

I'd expect our starters to win their battle against the Mavs starters, but I'm sure the Lakers felt the same way. As a result, we know the real battle will be in the trenches when both benches are playing.

.

As an aside:

No Delonte tonight makes me kind of sad on the inside. I would have wanted to see how he and Hayward would have interacted. Anyway . . . hope Delonte gets well soon. I liked him on the Celtics years ago.

Fearless Prediction:

Jazz win. Why? It's our home opener, the Mavs played late last night in LA. And they got a win on this road trip, they're not going to be trying to shock the world two nights in a row.
