I can say from his Summer League playing that he anticipates where his teammates are going to be and that caught a lot of potential NBA players off guard. His teammates better be looking for the ball when it's in Exum's hands because if they're open they'll be receiving a pass. And it's going to be highlight worthy.

While Dante Exum runs like a gazelle he also is as lean as a gazelle. That is not lost on Dante. When asked what his biggest challenge in the NBA will be Dante responded the physicality of the league.

I think physicality. You know, to step up and play with grown men compared to what I've been used to...I got a quick first step, and getting into the paint and trying to finish over guys, I think, and play with contact. So I think that's gonna be the main thing. I'm gonna have to try and adjust as quick as possible to it.

via jazzfanatical.wordpress.com

I've talked to Amar about this and he asked me what was one thing Dante should work on this year. Instead of answering his jump shot or finishing ability, I just said getting comfortable in the league. There's so much for him to take in as a young teenager. Just letting him settle in will be the biggest improvement he can make. I think we'll see big things from Exum in the beginning of the year then he'll hit a huge wall in December. By about February after the all-star break, I think that's when you'll see the light go on for Exum. While he may not win Rookie of the Year, he's going to be a highlight machine and next year, he'll take a Paul George-ian leap in production and ability.

Dante was asked how he did at the World Cup. His response sounds like he wanted to play more.

Yeah, the Worlds was a bit up and down for me. You know, I didn't get as many minutes as I wan-would've liked to, but you know, it's all about a learning experience for me, and you know, [Australian national team head coach] Andrej [Lemanis] made that clear with me. And so, I had a good experience with it, in learning how to be professional in that kind of environment.

via jazzfanatical.wordpress.com

While I do believe he needed to play more I think it was a good opportunity for Dante to learn about having to pay his dues. With Utah, he's going to be thrown at a lot of situations that he's probably not going to be on the winning side of. That's good. That's how you learn. You learn more from failures than successes. But being able to see it from afar and watch his teammates and how they carried themselves at the FIBA tournament helped tremendously. It sounds like it was communicated to Exum that he needed to wait his turn. The Olympics hopefully will be a whole different ball game for the Aussies.

As you can imagine not playing can have a huge effect on your confidence. Here's what Exum had to say about that.

I think so. You know, a lot of people have been kinda putting me down. ‘Cause I'm only 19 years old, and I know it's gonna be a patience thing, but I know both me and Rodney, we're competitors, and we wanna be the best player we can right now. And we're, so, we're coming in everyday and trying to get better so when it comes to the opening night, that we're ready. And it's not about trying to be patient, so.

via jazzfanatical.wordpress.com

To quote the Kanter, they're young and hungry. I think the lack of experience can sometime be a strength because the cynicism of failure has not set in yet. There'll be growing pains but I think Quin Snyder is the right person to help Dante. He seems like a cerebral character and he's going to be taken care of in Quin's guard-centric system.

What's interesting about this year is the Jazz's young players are looking forward to taking on the mantle of being leaders and representing the team. Quin Snyder has really empowered these guys to take ownership in this team. They're excited. When the Jazz moved on from Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap, you didn't see the young players excited about the change. Honestly, the coaching didn't change in strategy or system. But now, it's tailored to the young team and to their strengths. It should be a fun year.

Did you know the Tesla was the highest rated car on consumer reports like ever? Gordon does.

Best moment of the day encapsulated in this awkward question: "What was your hardest question today?"

This question was posited by David Locke to Gordon Hayward. If you go to the Utah Jazz media feed on UtahJazz.com and go to 1:24:27, you can see the internal struggle by Gordon Hayward. In his mind he's thinking, "Being asked about another man's genitals." But like a true pro, and just as Jon Rinehart taught him he replies, "Has being married affected your video game playing time?"

You're a good man, Hayward. But we know this wasn't your hardest question asked today. Good for you, though.

Gordon Hayward buying a Tesla is the most Gordon Hayward thing ever.

I got a Tesla. P85 Model S Tesla. It's the most fun thing I've ever driven. ... It was difficult [to purchase it]. It's a practical thing. It's the number one rated car on consumer reports ever. ... You can pay less money if you charge it at 4 am and 5 am.

I think the best part of this conversation is how Gordon Hayward understands that he gets paid so much money to play a game. How he feels awkward making more money than his parents even though he feels like his parents worked harder. He gets it. He understands that its a privilege. This is a guy the Utah Jazz need as a leader. He understands.

Gordon Hayward on Quin Snyder's offense.

Extremely excited. The spacing that he has put in. The fact that he's trying to get people to be passers first. That he wants us to play with pace. Extremely excited for a guy like me who's best in the open court.

Gordon Hayward also took a subtle jab at the prior establishment.

Extremely sharp. Really detailed. Precise. Kind of like me like how you're borderline OCD on certain things where it's gotta be done this way and it's gotta be right. Especially for a young team like us, we need somebody to tell us this is how has supposed to be. If you don't know it I'm going to teach it to you. Because we're so young and so inexperience we don't. know. what it takes to win.

It is pretty obvious that Gordon Hayward is a very cerebral player. Quin Snyder is a perfect coach for Gordon Hayward. His attention to detail is going to endear Hayward to him.

Let's hope that they do. I believe that the Jazz could offer Alec more than what the market may offer him and still have a team-friendly deal that helps them. That's right, Alec Burks is swoll. Swaggy and swoll. Looking at the pictures of Alec he looks like a professional basketball player now. He's going to be able to hold his own and he's going to be a pleasure to watch.

I'm not sure how to take this, but it seems like an underhanded cut at Alec Burks. Let me know if I'm mistaken.

David Locke: You mentioned Alec Burks I think he's a really interesting player. On one level you're asking players to play in this flow, on another level you're asking players to play inside this concept. ... The phrase I've heard on him before is "He doesn't know what he's doing so how are his teammates supposed to know what he's doing?"

Yes, sometimes Alec can play a little out of control, but he plays aggressive. Maybe compared to Tyrone Corbin's death march to the lottery of an offense Burks looked out of control, but can we really make any judgements on a player inside of Corbin's offensive system? The only players Tyrone Corbin's offense allowed to flourish were aging veterans. Even so his offense didn't allow them to flourish, his short-sighted vision which allowed these veterans to play so many minutes allowed them to flourish AKA put up meaningless production.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

Trey Burke confronts the controversy of his leaked racy selfies.

Following the precedent I set last year, I am having a Downbeat for every major Utah Jazz player. Starting with Trey Burke.

Trey Burke was silenced by the Utah Jazz yesterday due to what appeared to be a self inflicted controversy. Leaked pictures of Trey Burke naked leaked onto the interwebs. How that occurred is anybody's guess. Aaron Falk of the Salt Lake Tribune reports:

Trey Burke's season began with an apology Monday, after nude photos of the Utah Jazz point guard were leaked on the Internet and spread over social media. ... The photos, which did not show the player's face, apparently surfaced online a few weeks ago but spread suddenly late Sunday night, leaving Burke and the Jazz with a social media drama for its Media Day.

This is unfortunately an embarrassing time for Trey Burke. It's a learning opportunity of the price of being a professional athlete and star in the league.

Trey Burke's speaking was limited to an apology.

Publicly, I want to first and foremost apologize to my family [and] apologize to the Miller family, as well as my teammates. We already talked about it in the locker room. From this day forward, it won't happen again. They were old pictures. They were meant to be kept private but they weren't. So from this day forward my actions and my judgments will be much better. --Trey Burke

Quin Snyder, who most likely anticipated talking about Trey's basketball game rather than his selfie game, offered the coach speak and mentor response:

We've handled that internally, and Trey's handled it with his teammates, and we've handled it as an organization, and we're moving forward. -- Quin Snyder

Dennis Lindsey, however, didn't sound like they had taken a step forward past this incident.

We've collected a lot of the facts. We still have a few things to collect and a couple of people to visit with. It's safe to say ... that we are disappointed in what we've learned so far but we are going to move forward. At this point in time, we're collecting facts and we're going to reserve final judgment for a later date.

...

To couple both, I think, would be a little much at this point in time. Again, we still have a few more facts to find and some more research to do. I understand the timing of the question. It's certainly relevant. But we'll hold off on commenting about that right now. -- Dennis Lindsey

To those who are shocked that this happened haven't seen Trey Burke's Instagram account. Also, we don't know what context these were sent in. The guy has every right to send private pictures however he'd like to. However, this is the Utah Jazz. These pictures and this controversy is happening right after the Utah Jazz patted themselves on the back for having high character players and drafting high character players.

Is Trey Burke one of those high character players? I think so. It doesn't help his case, though, that there is leaked nudes of himself on the internet only a few months after making fun of a lesser fortunate person on the internet. The Utah Jazz are counting on Trey Burke asserting himself as a leader and an example. They are, also, hoping he endears himself to the fans of the Utah Jazz. The past two incidents are examples of him failing in that aspect.

As of right now, Trey Burke's twitter has been removed, but his Instagram remains. Twitter being removed prior to this whole situation would not have prevented this because the pictures were leaked not shared by Trey. For Trey this must be incredibly embarrassing. I wouldn't want my goods being spread all over the internet and I doubt any of our readers would appreciate the matter either. I never would have thought I would spend an entire media day trying to find something about Trey that didn't talk about his family heirloom, BUT here we are.

Soon practice will start and we'll get to start talking about Trey's basketball game, and thank goodness for that.

From this writer at SLCDunk, I say to Trey and his family, look past this, we're on your side. If this was sent in confidence we hope the people who released it get their due reward, and that you can keep your head held high. The one thing we Utah Jazz fans do is protect and love our own. As long as you do right by us, we'll do right by you. Good luck, Trey.

Trey Burke has been working on his defense a lot.

Coach Snyder says all the time that he knows I can play defense, but that it's a mindset. Something that I have to take serious enough. He tells me all the time that if it's important then your'e going to do it. ... I know I can be a good defender even with my size, getting over screens. I think that was the biggest area that I needed to improve upon and I worked on it a lot this summer.

I know when looking at Synergy last year that Trey Burke's kryptonite was the pick and roll. If he was screened he was eliminated from the play. If he improves this year in this category the Jazz's defense will improve tenfold.

Trey Burke was asked if fans needed to be patient with this Jazz team.

You need to be patient with this team, but, on the other hand, we have the talent to give the fans what they want.

Having listened to all these interviews I've noticed a high level of buy in from all the players. They are bought into Quin's philosophy and his energy. They've talked a lot about his high level of communication. Contrast that with Tyrone Corbin who was known for his lack of communication. Quin Snyder's level of execution with communicating his message will easily overcome any deficiencies in his strategy. This is one of those signs right here. There's a subtle confidence being bred with this Utah Jazz team.
