NBA History: Utah Jazz season finishes over the last decade

Some good. Some bad. Some ugly.

The Utah Jazz have won three of their last five games, and now there are only 15 more left in the season. Is this good? Will it be good in the end? I decided to look at the last decade of Jazz basketball and find out how they finished the season. The results were interesting, but didn't really lead to any big trends. I remember having good teams built around that Deron Williams / Ronnie Brewer / Andrei Kirilenko / Carlos Boozer / Mehmet Okur core; however, I also remember poor finishes because of injuries and holding people out of games so they would be somewhat fresh for the NBA Playoffs. Similarly, I think we'll all never forget the season where the Jazz were 12th in the West and ended up being 8th, and met the San Antonio Spurs in the first round. That season the team went on a tear to finish the season, and it shows, they finished 12-8. Most of us got hyped for this season because LAST season the team did the same thing, and finished 12-8 and put the rest of the West on notice. Of course, this season didn't turn out the way we expected. But it's not over yet.

So how did the Jazz teams perform over the last 20?

If you just chart the wins out you get one of the busiest graphs ever.

2006 2016 Utah Jazz 20 Game Finish Big Graph

It shows which of our teams finished well, specifically pointing out which team was the "best" team for each of the twenty games leading to the end of the season. If you just look at the average wins against this 2015-2016 season you get a more useful curve to follow.

2006 2016 Utah Jazz 20 Game Finish Average vs Current

So as fate would have it, the Jazz end up going .500 over the last 20 games of the season, over the last 10 seasons. The team has finished above .500 five times so far, if they do it again this season then it will boost the decade average up a bit. The Top 3 finishes were 14 wins, 13 wins, and 12 wins (twice). Utah is 3-2 right now, and I see that there could be 10 more wins on the schedule. Provide the team continues to play like they can.
