Revisiting the 2018 Utah Jazz Roster Rank

Who were the risers and fallers this season?

To kick off each new season the past couple years we as SLC Dunkers have ranked the Utah Jazz roster according most and least-most valuable. And for two years running Rudy Gobert has landed on top of that list. For today’s downbeat, I thought it would be a great time to review our collective list and evaluate how we did. This helps us recognize players that made the most progress and those that failed to achieve expectations.

Here’s how the polling looked last year:

  1. Rudy Gobert
  2. Donovan Mitchell
  3. Joe Ingles
  4. Ricky Rubio
  5. Derrick Favors
  6. Jae Crowder
  7. Dante Exum
  8. Royce O’Neale
  9. Alec Burks
  10. Thabo Sefolosha
  11. Grayson Allen
  12. Ekpe Udoh
  13. Raul Neto
  14. Georges Niang
  15. Tony Bradley
  16. Naz Mitrou-Long
  17. Tyler Cavanaugh

I don’t think there’s any question that Rudy Gobert is the most important player to winning on this basketball team. His impact on the game can hardly be overstated. He was deserving of team-MVP honors before the season started and earned every vote throughout the year. Donovan Mitchell was unquestionably the next most important player on this Jazz team. And that hasn’t changed since last Fall.

At the bottom of the list, we find the two-way players in Naz and Cavanaugh. This was also no surprise and I wouldn’t expect them to move much if at all.

Everything in between? That’s where things get pretty interesting. I’m really intrigued by how the re-vote will go here in a few months. For now, let’s evaluate who most most and least valued coming into the season. Let’s start with who deserved to be higher.
