Coming back for a 3rd consecutive year is #JazzRank, where we vote on the Utah Jazz roster to decide who the most valuable player is. This has brought some interesting results in the past, like the criminal underrating of Royce O’Neale and the unfortunate over-ranking of an aging Joe Johnson.
I’ll start with some caveats. Value is subjective. Is winning the most important to value? Is talent the most significant? How much do you weigh in a player’s age and role on the team moving forward? What about a player’s contract vs. his production?
You’ll have to answer those for yourself. I’ve swayed away from defining value for the purposes of this vote, because I hope to get an overall average when the list is complete.
Before we jump into 2019-2020, however, let’s go back to last year’s list and remind ourselves of our hard work. Unsurprisingly, Rudy Gobert was deemed most valuable. But what was the rest of the list like?
- Rudy Gobert
- Donovan Mitchell
- Joe Ingles
- Ricky Rubio
- Derrick Favors
- Jae Crowder
- Dante Exum
- Royce O’Neale
- Alec Burks
- Thabo Sefalosha
- Grayson Allen
- Ekpe Udoh
- Raul Neto
- Georges Niang
- Tony Bradley
- Naz Mitrou-Long
- Tyler Cavanaugh
Well, my first thought is “Wow, that’s a lot of turnover on this Jazz roster”. And no I’m not talking about a delicious apple dessert. After preaching stability and continuity last summer, the Jazz front office went in a very different direction this summer. Utah had the 5th highest roster continuity heading into the 2018-2019 season, according to Basketball-Reference. Only 7 players remain going into 2019-2020!
Which will only make this year’s voting more interesting! Where will all the newcomers fit in?That’s for you to decide. Let’s go! (Reminder, we are starting at the bottom of the roster)
